Commitment Pattern Chart

Prepare

Build Relationships of Trust

  1. Become Acquainted
    1. Tell about yourself and ask about others
  2. Build on Common Beliefs
    1. Show respect for others beliefs
    2. point out common beliefs
    3. Relate message to common beliefs
  3. Show Empathy
    1. Try to understand others thoughts and feelings
    2. Share similar experiences or feelings
  4. Be dependable
  5. Meet the needs of investigators
  6. Show Christlike love for others
  7. Listen to others

Help Others Feel and Recognize the Spirit

  1. Bear Testimony
    1. Avoid words that nonmembers will not understand
    2. Bear simple testimony that relates to the subject
  2. Share Experiences
    1. Be simple, clear and direct
    2. Tell experiences that will help others
    3. Do not share past transgressions
  3. Identify the influence of the Holy Ghost
    1. Ask others to describe their feelings
    2. Tell others they are feeling the Spirit when the Spirit is present

Present the Message

  1. Present with Faith
    1. Present the doctrines as facts
    2. Do not apologize for teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ
    3. Avoid contention and arguing
  2. Present the Message Clearly
    1. Speak clearly by varying the tone and speed of your voice
    2. Use good eye to eye contact
    3. Use appropriate body language to communicate your feelings
  3. Personalize the Message
    1. Simplify the message
    2. Change the pace of the discussion
    3. Give examples and illustrations
  4. Present correct doctrine
  5. Use audiovisual aids effectively

Find Out

  1. Listen
    1. Look for nonverbal messages
    2. Restate
    3. Pause
  2. Ask Appropriate Questions
    1. Maintain an equal relationship
    2. Do not manipulate the investigator
    3. Be simple and direct
  3. Ask Additional Questions
    1. Ask a question and listen
    2. Do not interrogate
    3. Show interest in others needs or feelings
  4. Rephrase questions
  5. Respond with encouragement
  6. Ask nonjudgmental questions

Invite

  1. Extend the Invitation
    1. Explain what the investigator is to do and when
    2. Ask a direct 'Will you' question
    3. Show respect and do not manipulate
  2. Confirm the Commitment
    1. Make sure the investigator knows exactly what to do and when
    2. Ask the investigators to state that they will fulfill the commitment
  3. Extend the invitation using two questions
  4. Rephrase the invitation

Power Invite - Seven Steps

  1. "Today we’re going to give you an invitation…" (Prepare - help them out of passive mode into active mode)
  2. "The invitation is to…" (Present the message - be specific so they are sure of what is required)
  3. "How do you feel about that…" (Find out - an invitation for them to talk)
  4. Find out and Resolve any concerns (Resolve concerns - once resolved step 3 may need to be repeated to get back into the flow of the invitation)
  5. "Mr. Smith, from today onwards, will you…" (Invite - ask with faith, wait for reply)
  6. "Mr. Smith, the Lord is very pleased with your willingness to…" (Confirm the commitment - confirm to them that they have made the right choice) For more important commitments… "Now that you have decided to…how do you feel?" (identify the spirit)
  7. "We want to do all that we can to help you fulfill your commitment with the Lord. What can we do to help you…" (arrange to follow up)

Follow Up

  1. Arrange to Follow Up
    1. Explain that you want to follow up
    2. Plan a follow up visit
    3. Encourage the investigator
  2. Make Regular Contacts
    1. Ask questions to find out how well they fulfilled the commitment
    2. Adjust the commitment or give the original commitment again
    3. Encourage and support the investigator

Resolve Concerns

  1. Discover the Concern
    1. Use 'find out' skills
  2. Discuss the Concern
    1. Find out if others know how to resolve their concern
    2. Help others see the results if their decisions
    3. Tell them that you know they can make the right Decision
    4. Encourage them to seek the Lord's Help
  3. Help Resolve the Concern
    1. Use Scriptures
    2. Give examples or illustration
    3. Share testimony or personal experience
    4. Book of Mormon
  4. Answer the question
  5. Give additional information
  6. Give examples and illustrations
  7. Show empathy
